Our Small Spear Pestle with Flat Mortars are considered the definitive article by top cooks including Nigel Slater (featured on Simple Suppers) and Nigella Lawson; and are objects of desire for serious foodies around the world.

The John Julian Porcelain Flat Mortar with Spear Pestle is designed for everyday use as well as being a statement piece for any kitchen. The flat mortar creates the perfect surface for better grinding and paste making.

Porcelain is very durable, hard-wearing and surprisingly heavy making it the ideal material for pestle and mortars. Although it is unglazed, it will not suffer from lasting stains as the porcelain has been fired to an incredibly high temperature.

  • Both Mortar and Pestle are hand thrown individually
  • Mortar: Approximately 18cm wide x 3.8cm high
  • Pestle: 10.5cm high
  • Easily cleaned in soapy water with a soft cloth or sponge

As each piece is made by hand there will sometimes be some slight variation in colour and size, but we see this as part of their individual character and charm.

Hand Crafted

We hope that you will be happy with our products and appreciate their hand crafted qualities.

It is important to note that our artisan production methods are devised to produce products with individual character.

It is a central part of our ethos that the human hand is evident in the final product and therefore no two items that we produce are ever absolutely identical.

As each piece is made by hand there will sometimes be some slight variation in colour, detail and size, but we see this as part of their individual character and charm.

Bespoke

Elevate your dining experience by tailoring your tableware. At John Julian we offer a simple bespoke service using traditional techniques so that you can add a crest, monogram or logo to our tableware range. We create bespoke tableware sets for families as well as branded statement tableware for restaurants and hotels.

We can print and impress designs on our tableware using stamps. We can also add a hand painted line around the rims of our pieces. Occasionally we collaborate with other artists such as Makoto Kagoshima, Laura Carlin and Liz Hodges.

Net Zero

Caring for our planet and limiting our environmental impact is something that Julian is incredibly passionate about and we are always seeking ways to improve our practices.

John Julian is a member of the British Ceramic Confederation and Julian is a part of the Energy and Emissions Group which is working towards net zero emissions by 2050.

We consider our environmental impact at every turn.

Packaging

Our packaging is carefully considered and is as eco friendly as possible.

We use cardboard boxes to ship our ceramics which can all be recycled, composted or reused.

We use recycled shredded cardboard from a renewable source as void filler (instead of bubble wrap) that can be reused or easily composted. It also makes great mulch on vegetable patches.

We also use 100% biodegradable and fully compostable packing peanuts.

Recycled paper, kraft paper and newsprint is used as much as possible and we occasionally re-use bubble wrap and other plastic material in our packaging but we never buy new.
