Role Overview

John Julian is a pottery workshop and online retailer selling high-end ceramic kitchenware, tableware and serveware all hand made in the UK by skilled makers. 

Our ceramics are sold via our website and by hand-picked retailers around the world. Our pieces can also be found in restaurants and hotels. Loved by our customers,every piece we make, whether it is a plate, bowl or pestle and mortar, is shaped from raw clay with care and craftsmanship and are designed to last a lifetime. 

We are seeking a Ceramic Thrower used to working in Porcelain and Stoneware to join our studio producing our high-end product. This role is for a highly skilled maker with a deep understanding of refinement, consistency, and production excellence. You will play a key role in creating beautifully balanced, tactile forms that reflect the highest standards of craftsmanship and design.

The successful candidate will be confident working in a disciplined production environment while maintaining the subtlety and precision required for a luxury product. A strong understanding of kiln processes and firing is essential.

Key Responsibilities

Luxury Production Throwing

  • Throw high-end functional forms to technical drawings ensuring consistency.
  • Accurately repeat established shapes and dimensions across production runs.
  • Maintain refined wall thickness, symmetry, and surface quality suitable for luxury tableware.
  • Manage the making process to ensure everything is done when the clay is in the ‘right state’ to ensure successful results.
  • Work efficiently while upholding uncompromising quality standards

Quality & Brand Standards

  • Inspect work at all stages to ensure it meets brand quality expectations
  • Work collaboratively to continually refine forms and processes

Studio Practice

  • Maintain a clean and tidy professional Workshop environment
  • Work closely with Lead Maker and Production Coordinator to capture timings and work to the Production planning whilst protecting craftsmanship.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Significant experience as a professional ceramic thrower
  • Demonstrated ability to produce consistent, high-quality functional ware at volume
  • Strong technical understanding of clay behaviour, drying, and firing
  • Practical experience with kiln loading and firing cycles
  • Exceptional attention to detail and pride in craftsmanship
  • Must have existing right to work in the UK

Desirable Experience

  • Background in luxury, design-led, or premium ceramics
  • Experience working to technical designs.

Packer and Stock Assistant

 

Job title: Packer and Stock Assistant
Reporting to: Operations Supervisor and Business Manager
Location: In the John Julian Workshop, Burcombe, Salisbury.
Contract: 
Casual with potential to become permanent. Need to be available for at least 20 hours per week over 4 days (Monday to Friday).

We are looking for an enthusiastic, “can-do” and methodical individual to provide casual packer/stock assistant support to the business, starting as soon as possible.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

  •        Moving heavy packs of clay and other supplies.
  •        Picking and packing orders and moving boxes.
  •         Palleting orders and moving pallets.
  •         Sanding finished pieces.
  •         Packing and unpacking gas kilns.
  •         Grading kilns when required.
  •         Move and count inventory – Firsts and Seconds.
  •        Keep stock of Firsts and Seconds ordered and tidy.
  •         Helping track tasks on the Workshop Ipad.
  •         Counting/ tracking stock of cardboard, packing materials and other supplies
  •         Following the required Health & Safety protocols and completing relevant records as required.
  •         Assist with administration of fulfilling and dispatching orders.
  •        Assist generally within the Workshop
  •        Regular and thorough cleaning
  •     The role and tasks for this role are varied and repetitive and can be strenuous.

Essential requirements for this post holder:

  •        A good team worker.
  •        Able to follow detailed instructions.
  •         Has good attention to detail and can work carefully with fragile items.
  •         Is willing to learn and has a positive attitude.
  •         Is able and happy to undertake physically demanding tasks and have the stamina to perform such tasks throughout the working day.

Although not the priority for this recruitment, this role could be expanded to include ceramics-based tasks if the candidate had suitable experience.

The recruitment process is likely to include a trial shift.
